If you’re from Australia and played on the San Antonio Spurs basketball team that won the NBA championship in America, does that guarantee that you’re a household figure at home?
Apparently not, as Spurs key reserve guard Patty Mills and reserve forward Aron Baynes found out when they photobombed a local sports reporter, who shoved Mills away and called both players “idiots.”
Mills and Baynes were in Australia with the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, aka “The Larry.” The trophy, which was in Argentina with Manu Ginobili earlier this week, is on a 12-city, six country tour.
Our immediate reaction: how could the reporter be such an idiot. But in Australia more people attend dog racing than they do basketball games.
Which led us to ask ourselves: if an American were to ever win a championship in Australian Rules Football—that continent’s most popular sport—would be care here in the United States?
Here’s more of Mills and Baynes enjoying themselves in Australia:
- Kyle Lowry gets his shot snuffed by comedian Kevin Hart
- Can he kick it? This sports anchor definitely can
- This one possession typifies the greatness of the San Antonio Spurs
