Two weeks ago we shared with you the story and video of Lacey Holsworth, the eight-year-old girl who met Michigan State’s Adreian Payne —and became one of his biggest fans. Holsworth even escorted Payne onto the floor for senior night this season.

This morning there are reports that Holsworth died last night. Here is what was posted at 3 a.m. today on the “missprinceesslacey” instagram page:

For much of her young life, Holsworth battled a rare form of cancer, neuroblastoma. She met Payne two years ago when the team visited the hospital where she was being treated.

The cancer had gone into remission, but returned in the fall.

Holsworth had been very visible in the past few weeks,

She helped Payne cut down the nets after Michigan State won the Big 10 tournament.  She sat in the stands at Madison Square Garden as the Spartans appeared in the NCAA tournament.  She watched from court side just last Thursday in North Texas as Payne finished third in the college basketball slam dunk contest. And she was with Payne last week as he judged the AMFAM High School slam dunk contest that was held in Dallas.
