Cornerback Antonio Cromartie was released by the New York Jets over the weekend in a salary-cap move. It wasn’t a surprise, even to him: he turns 30 next month, he played hurt most of last year, he had a big bonus coming and the Jets have other plans for his position.
Here’s hoping he catches on somewhere, continues to play and makes his mark. Because right now, he’s not known for his three Pro Bowls, for leading the NFL in interceptions in 2007 or for coming up one game short of the Super Bowl twice.
It’s for having, by one count, 12 kids by eight different women, including four with his wife.
His, uh, habits were well-known back in 2010, when HBO’s Hard Knocks followed the Jets in training camp. They couldn’t resist asking him to name all of his children. No one will ever forget his answer, which is included in this TMZ clip:
(Worth noting: that Hard Knocks video is also posted ON THE OFFICIAL NFL WEBSITE. Can’t accuse them of whitewashing the league’s image there.)
Since then, it’s been reported that Cromartie is handling his money better, is loyal to his marriage … and has gotten a vasectomy since his youngest child was born.
Sounds like he’s ready to be a full-time football player – instead of a full-time punchline.
