CBS announced earlier today that the NFL Today pregame show would get a different look with Shannon Sharpe and Dan Marino axed, and replaced in the studio by Tony Gonzalez (and possibly a player to be named later).
Shannon Sharpe fired: that hurts. Because Sharpe was a strong voice among the CBS crew and, in his 10 years in the studio, he was more than the verbal and facial tics that were so ripe for parody. What he said after the Dolphins’ bullying scandal first broke in November—as his NFL Today comrades sat in complete silence—is the best example of what he brought to the table each week:
Good luck to Gonzalez, and hopefully he can bring as much fire to the job as Sharpe did that day.
And good luck to Saturday Night Live’s Jay Pharoah, who had a field day impersonating Sharpe this past season during a Weekend Update segment.
Sharpe, clearly, didn’t see the humour.
