Twenty years ago UMass and Temple was one of the biggest rivalries in college basketball. Both teams had high profile coaches—John Calipari at UMass, and John Chaney at Temple. It was common during the 1990s to see both teams near the top of the national rankings (the 1996 UMass team reached the Final Four).
On February 13, 1994 Temple (8th ranked) traveled to UMass (No. 13) for a Sunday afternoon nationally televised game. In the final seconds UMass guard Mike Williams hit a game-winning shot to give the Minutemen a 56-55 win.
Calipari was at the podium answering questions when Chaney rushed in. According to reports Chaney was upset that Calipari—even in his team’s victory—lit into the officials after the game.
Chaney walked into the room by saying: “May I please say something, coach.” And then this happened:
To this day, one of the best coaching dust-ups ever.
Over the years the two heated rivals were able to enjoy a nice friendship. And two years ago Calipari posted this Instagram picture after seeing Chaney at an event:
