You hear a lot of trivia about the NBA, but this is one item that never crossed our path: Who scored the first basket in NBA history?
Today we learned the first bucket was scored by Ossie Schectman, and we know that because it was announced that he died yesterday at the age of 94.
That first basket (in the video above) came on Nov. 1, 1946 for the New York Knicks, who were playing in the first game of the Basketball Association of America (now the NBA). Schectman opened the scoring with a lay-up, and the Knicks went on to beat the Toronto Huskies, 68-66.
Schectman, a native New Yorker, won a college national championship in 1941 while playing for Long Island University.
This is what NBA Commissioner David Stern had to say about Schectman:
“Ossie Schectman was a true NBA pioneer. Playing for the New York Knickerbockers in the 1946-47 season Ossie scored the league’s first basket, which placed him permanently in the annals of NBA history. On behalf of the entire NBA family, our condolences go out to Ossie’s family.”
