Former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was charged with first-degree murder this afternoon, nine days after a 27-year-old friend was found murdered.
Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was taken into police custody this morning, and was formerly charged in the afternoon. Hernandez, who entered a not guilty plea, is being held without bail.
Hernandez was wearing red shorts and a white t-shirt as he was led—handcuffed—out of his home. On Tuesday a judge sealed records in relation to the homicide investigation into the death of Odin L. Lloyd, who was found dead of gunshot wounds on June 17 not far from Hernandez’s home.
Shortly after the arrest the New England Patriots reported on their website and twitter feed that they had released Hernandez.
The Patriots have long been considered a model franchise, but the arrest of Hernandez—who last year signed a seven-year, $40 million contract extension—has cast a shadow over the organization.
